ABOUT ME

Hello! My name is Alexis Schulman (pronouns: she/her/hers) and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. I have a master’s in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. My undergraduate degree is in Criminology from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. You can find me taking care of cats at an adoption center, going to yoga classes, and checking out new coffee shops in the Triangle.

I provide therapy for children, teens and adults to overcome mental health disorders related to anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, parenting and other relationship concerns.

EXPERTISE

I work with individuals (ages 5 & up) experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional regulation issues, parenting concerns, and self-esteem issues. I help clients learn to regulate their emotions and uncover past experiences that influence their behavior today. I have experience working with children, teens, and adults in community and private practice settings.

I specialize in working with teens as they face significant pressures at school and home. We work to navigate their social, academic, and family environment. I have experience coaching parents as they come to further understand themselves, in order to better parent their child. I work with individuals committed to creating healthy behavioral patterns.

COUNSELING APPROACHES

I take a non-judgmental approach to counseling my clients and consider the client the expert on themself. I believe therapy can benefit anyone willing to show up. From there, we can work on realizing how one gets in their own way for reasons they often do not understand. It is this basis of self-awareness that allows for change.

Creating change can involve introducing a mindfulness practice to ground yourself in the present moment and emotionally regulate. I draw from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to teach coping skills designed to make life easier. Regardless of the presenting issue, imperfection is seen as an opportunity to be kind to oneself.
